Mission Statement:
The Mission of World Relief, as originated within the National Association of Evangelicals, is to work with, for and from the Church to relieve human suffering, poverty and hunger worldwide in the name of Jesus Christ.
Our Values:
We are pre-eminently committed to serve the Church of Jesus Christ and to live out the principles of his Kingdom.
- We are committed to a gospel that embraces the whole person, both physically and spiritually.
- We are committed to lives of radical discipleship, seeking to follow Jesus in all that we say and do.
- We are committed to the education of the Church in all aspects of social engagement.
- We are committed to justice.
- We are committed to the Bible, understanding it to be God’s authoritative word providing His prescriptive instruction for right doctrine and lifestyle.
- We identity with the poor and needy by our actions as well as our words.
- We are committed to prayer both individually and collectively.
- We are committed to excellence.
- We are committed to the Kingdom of God, one that is “upside-down” in its values, where the poor, disadvantaged, and dispossessed have a special place.
Our Beliefs:
The following doctrines are crucial to the understanding of our faith, and should issue in mutual love, practical Christian service and evangelistic concern:
- The sovereignty and grace of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit in creation, providence, revelation, redemption, and final judgment.
- The divine inspiration of the Holy Scripture and its consequent entire trustworthiness and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
- The universal sinfulness and guilt of fallen man, making him subject to God’s wrath and condemnation.
- The substitutionary sacrifice of the incarnate Son of God as the sole and all-sufficient ground of redemption from the guilt and power of sin, and from its eternal consequences.
- The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ crucified and risen from the dead.
- The illuminating, regenerating, indwelling, and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit.
- The priesthood of all believers, who form the universal Church, the body of Christ, which is committed by his command to the proclamation of the gospel throughout the world.
- The expectation of the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ, in power and glory.
Our Principles:
While we engage in relief work, we understand that the ultimate goal of any relief intervention is to bring people and communities back to their levels of normalcy so that these communities could continue their path towards integrated development.
- The goal of Christian development lies in restored relationships with the Creator, with others in community, and with the environment He made.
- While World Relief’s focus is on the role of the Church in ministering to the needs of the economically poor and powerless, our overarching concern must be to see restored relationships in all their fullness.
- The two priorities of Christian development are the priority of relationships and the priority of the future.
- Christian development must be expressed by the following values:
- Compassion
- Justice
- Cultural transformation
- Empowerment for service
- Sustainability
- We are committed to working in partnership with evangelical churches, enabling them to fulfill their ministry to the poor—whether through financial giving or practical service, enabling the church to truly be church to its community.
Our Vision:
Understanding that the local church is our primary vehicle for the generation and distribution of resources, World Relief will work with churches worldwide to equip, train, and mobilize them for holistic ministry to the poor.
- World Relief will seek to engage the local church in social ministries as a scriptural and practical demonstration of the love of Jesus Christ for all mankind. We see our first priority as the more than 800,000,000 poorest of the poor and the displaced refugees, orphans and homeless of our world. The depth and breadth of our technical expertise will be made available to local churches that desire to respond to the challenge and motivation to engage in holistic ministries to the poor in their communities.
- World Relief will engage with local churches in developing responses to alleviate human suffering arising from natural disaster, personal tragedy and other acute needs (disaster response, refugee assistance).
- World Relief will seek ways to implement longer-range solutions to problems confronting the needy from a widespread technical perspective (breadth, depth, and high impact). These long-term solutions fit within an integrated development umbrella that includes:
- Health programs
- Education programs
- Agriculture programs
- Refuge programs (refugee care and disaster response)
- Income Generation programs
- Defining poverty, growth, and development in the broadest sense, World Relief seeks to work with churches in the developed world where the context in which they minister is one of spiritual poverty and the need for growth and development is more a matter of depth and world view (donor education).
- World Relief views its mission as one of transformation of and through local churches in both the developed world and the developing world, and sees ministry to the “giving” church to be as significant as ministry to the “recipient” church. In that context, World Relief commits its ministry and resources to an exchange relationship between churches in both contexts.
- While churches in developed countries will naturally provide material resources to developing country congregations, World Relief commits to providing both framework and practical methods for enabling the developing country churches to make a contribution back to the churches in the developed world in order to benefit both groups of believers and the societies in which they minister.
